Exploring Wheel Throwing for Adults- Monday Afternoons with Isaih Porter (10/31/22 - 12/12/22), 1-4PM

- NOTE: Class will not meet Thanksgiving Week (Nov. 21-25)
Times: 1–4pm
Price: $360 (glaze, 1st bag of clay, firing, instruction and drop-in open studio time included). Tools ($20 + tax) and additional clay ($15-$35 per 25 lb bag) available for purchase at Clay Studio.
Description: Over the course of 6 weeks we will meet in the studio to explore the throwing on the potter’s wheel for those with some experience. If you know how to throw a basic cylinder and are looking to expand your knowledge and technique, this is the class for you! Learn more about throwing more complex forms and develop your personal ceramics practice. Experienced thrower and instructor Isaih Porter will teach you to focus on both the process and the product while progressing your skills each week.
Students will be encouraged to explore projects to push their skills with the support of an encouraging teacher. There will be an optional open studio block available for students who want some independent working time to hone their skills. Age 18+.
Drop-in open studio hours will be available for this course: Students are welcome to come in to Clay Studio during our Open Studio Lab hours to work independently on Sundays from 11AM-4PM, Mondays from 10AM-1PM, Tuesdays from 4PM-8PM, and Fridays from 10AM-1PM. Please note that Open Studio Lab hours are subject to change.
Covid-19 Vaccination Mandate: Starting February 1, 2022, Clay Studio will require all employees, teachers, members and students to be vaccinated in order to enter the studio. You must show your vaccination card, a photo of your vaccination card or your SMART Health Card Record from Ca.gov to a Clay Studio employee on your first day of class. You may also email a photo of the above to info@ClayStudioSB.org.
Instructor: Isaih Porter
About Your Instructor: Isaih is an artist and potter from Southern California. After developing an obsession with wheel-throwing in a high school ceramics class, Isaih attended Connecticut College to earn a bachelor’s degree in art and computer science. While at college, Isaih was focused on improving his throwing techniques and experimenting with different mid-temperature clay and glaze recipes-- he was also a teacher's assistant in various ceramics courses covering mold-making and throwing basics. Isaih has worked at the AMOCA Ceramics Studio in Pomona, California, where he helped make clay, load and fire kilns, give private lessons, package artwork, paint walls, build shelves, and more. In the past few years, Isaih has created a small business selling his own wares, teaching others, working as a production potter for other ceramic artists, and he's even converted an old electric kiln to run on propane in his front yard.
