Ruby Mandell began her journey with clay 5 years ago during her senior year of high school after taking a class.
As a student at UCSB, Ruby majored in art, where she continued her passion for ceramics, and developed her pottery skills, working with Dane Vanaas and Lori Hansen, and was also an intercollegiate athlete for UCSB’s track and field team as a hurdler.
“I love ceramics for the way it forces body awareness in ways that my sport hadn’t even required. The combination of physical and mental focus entices me. One of my mentors, Lori, introduced me to slip trailing and I have been enamored by it ever since. I find the inspiration for my slip patterns in henna, oriental rugs, Calacas, Hamsa’s and other intricate repeating patterns.”
